In what will go down as the most effortless viral Internet challenge of all time, the mannequin challenge has officially taken over the Interwebs, and basically requires you to just sit still and look pretty for a few seconds. Started late last month, the mannequin challenge requires zero dance moves, no lip syncing and really no brain power for that matter, and calls for a large group of participants to hold a ridiculous pose while hip hop artist Rae Sremmurd’s track “Black Beatles”, featuring Gucci Mane, plays in the background.
The challenge is believed to have been traced back to the high school students of Edward H. White High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Many other schools and sports teams quickly followed the trend, and the following Monday, an Instagram search for the #MannequinChallenge turned up more than 56,000 results.
Although this craze doesn’t feature a charitable aspect, like the ice bucket challenge or the 22-push-up challenge, it has gone so viral in the past week that many professional sports teams have also joined in on the fun, including The New York Giants, The Pittsburg Steelers and the Milwaukee Bucks, who took their challenge to all new heights… literally.
The Dancing with the Stars cast also successfully filmed their mannequin challenge, with each dancer and contestant striking a pose on the dance floor and then breaking out into a unanimous freestyle. The trend apparently has become so big that its even brought together some iconic groups, like Destiny’s Child, when Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle recreated their own hilarious version.
YouTuber Lele Pons did her own unique spin on the challenge, sans the original background music, but she did create quite the hilarious sketch out of it, recreating a scenario we can surely all relate to.
Many have wondered if there is any significance to the challenge and the song choice, however it could be simply an accidental coincidence that the song was playing in the background of the very first mannequin challenge, which was clearly enough for trend-followers to follow in its lead.
“Black Beatles” was released in August, but didn’t catch on until late last month, and during their most recent show last week, they surprised the crowd when they did their own Mannequin Challenge onstage. The song itself has racked up its fair share of profit from the challenge, and is currently up to #1 on the iTunes charts. Talk about an overnight success story.
